[!abstract] Though an idol be nothing, yet things offered up to idols are not to be eaten, for fear of scandal.
Book: 1 Corinthians · ← 1 Corinthians 7 · 1 Corinthians 9 →
1
LA De iis autem quæ idolis sacrificantur, scimus quia omnes scientiam habemus. Scientia inflat, caritas vero ædificat.
EN Now concerning those things that are sacrificed to idols: we know we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up: but charity edifies.
^1
2
LA Si quis autem se existimat scire aliquid, nondum cognovit quemadmodum oporteat eum scire.
EN And if any man think that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know.
^2
3
EN But if any man love God, the same is known by him.
^3
4
EN But as for the meats that are sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world and that there is no God but one.
^4
5
EN For although there be that are called gods, either in heaven or on earth (for there be gods many and lords many):
^5
6
EN Yet to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him: and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
^6
7
EN But there is not knowledge in every one. For some until this present, with conscience of the idol, eat as a thing sacrificed to an idol: and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
^7
8
EN But meat does not commend us to God. For neither, if we eat, shall we have the more: nor, if we eat not, shall we have the less.
^8
9
EN But take heed lest perhaps this your liberty become a stumbling block to the weak.
^9
10
EN For if a man see him that has knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not his conscience, being weak, be emboldened to eat those things which are sacrificed to idols?
^10
11
LA Et peribit infirmus in tua scientia, frater, propter quem Christus mortuus est?
EN And through your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ has died?
^11
12
LA Sic autem peccantes in fratres, et percutientes conscientiam eorum infirmam, in Christum peccatis.
EN Now when you sin thus against the brethren and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
^12
13
EN Wherefore, if meat scandalize my brother, I will never eat flesh, lest I should scandalize my brother.
^13
[!note]- Knowledge puffs up, etc…
Knowledge, without charity and humility, serves only to puff persons up.
[!note]- Gods many, etc…
Reputed for such among the heathens.
[!note]- If meat scandalize…
That is, if my eating cause my brother to sin.
